Different day, same story

Well,  we wish we had some wonderful new developments to report on since last week but in reality, not much as changed.  We were looking forward to last Tuesday when the New Zealand government announced what would happen at the end of the period of Level 4 restriction.   Well, we did in fact move to Level 3 restrictions but as it was explained what that would mean, we realized our day to day life would change very little.  We are required to stay in our "bubble" and continue physical distancing of at least 6 feet.  We are still restricted on how far we can travel from home to staying within our region.  Two things did change, for which we are grateful.   Restaurants can now sell take out food and on the first day of level 3 we got take away fish and chips from our favorite joint.  It tasted so good!  The other change is we can go to the beach if it is no more than 45 minutes away.  Luckily, Raglan beach is exactly 45 minutes away.  On Saturday, we took our bikes and went to Raglan and rode several miles on the breach.  It was beautiful and rejuvinating.

We have felt blessed to be in New Zealand for many reasons, but in the current conditions in the world, we feel very sheltered.  New Zealand has done an excellent job in controlling the Covid virus in it's population.  With the rest of the world not having as good of results, it makes me wonder what New Zealand's plan is going forward in the long term.  One problem I see is the population here is essentially unexposed with no population immunity.  Until a vaccine is created, they will not be able to open their borders to the world without risking reintroducing the virus.  Tourism is the country's number one industry and I wonder how long they can continue without having that source of income.  It may be years before the borders are opened.

We are optimistic that some semblence of normalcy will return soon.  We are to be at level 3 for two weeks and the government will again re-evaluate.  We really hope our missionaries will be able to resume more normal activities soon.  They are being very brave and are doing their best but even so, they are starting to get bored with their situation.  We are getting them involved in helping clean the vacant flats as we feel comfortable to allow them to do so. and that seems to help.

We are making the most of the situation and for the most part, we are enjoying the things we can do.  We hope you are all well.  We feel blessed to be able to serve at this unique time under adverse conditions.  We feel the sustaining love of our Savior, Jesus Christ and know he has everything under control.

Love Elder and Sister Folland
